WHERE CAN WE SCUBA DIVE?
The underwater world is vast. But if you look for top diving spots, a few places rise to the surface.
FLORIDA KEYS
The convenient Keys (a chain of small islands southwest of Miami) offer superb
diving and operators. Popular sites include a Christ of the Abyss statue
off Key Largo, the Dry Tortugas islands, the angular Elbow Reef, and many
sunken ships--a mix of real wrecks and vessels intentionally sent down for
divers' enjoyment.
CAYMAN ISLANDS
The Caymans reign as a Caribbean queen for divers. The islands offer some
of the most renowned diving, including incredible wall diving at Grand Cayman.
Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are more subdued on the surface, but every
bit as colorful below.
COZUMEL, MEXICO
A quick ferry ride from Cancun, Cozumel boasts consistently clear conditions,
and the drift diving is legendary. Moving slowly past the reef and marine
life is like watching an underwater movie.
GREAT BARRIER REEF, AUSTRALIA
It's the mother lode of scuba diving. The reef stretches along more than
1,200 miles of Australia's Queensland coast. Along the way are more than
1,400 species of fish and an incredible variety of coral formations.
FIJI
Fiji might be far from home, but it's well worth the trip. The main
attraction for divers is soft coral, which creates incredibly colorful underwater
landscapes.
RED SEA
Within the unusual marine environment between Arabia and Africa, you'll find
unique underwater life. Still relatively undiscovered, the most popular diving
is in the north, around the Gulf of Aqaba (out of the Israeli resort city
of Eilat). You can reach the reefs of Ras Muhammad--a national park and popular
dive spot--from the city of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.
